One of my younger friends happens to go to the state of New Hampshire to hike and climb. He was on a trail near Mt. Chocorua which is east of the White Mountain National Forest.
He and his female friend ran across a young black bear. It was probably 100 lbs or so. So I figured it was a second year cub that is out on his own and figured something out. People=food.
This bear would not leave him alone. The bear kept on following and at one point started to chase him. He has some interesting pictures. At one point he took a large stick and whacked in across the head. After several whacks and breaking the stick over its head the bear ran up a tree and the two were able to get out.
He did ask me about firearms and some of the laws regarding NH.
Funny we were talking of bears and that story came up.
The NH fish and game figures that hikers were feeding this bear so now the bear figured out that he can extort food from hikers. A very dangerous mix.
