I went to my LGS this morning to pick up a Browning A5 Ultimate that was in commifornications quarantine and saw a new 17HMR Single-Six in the case for 500.00! Everyone there was looking at tactical pandemic protection stuff that they will have to club someone with cuz they aren’t getting ammo! Probably 30 or more SA and DA Rugers, Smiths, Kimbers and Taurus’s in non defensive calibers. IE... the lowely .357, .38, .44’s, a couple 9mm that just don’t cut it in a revolver.....
So, with that, what are you all finding?

Roman has a 5.45x39 AK and ammo less than $300 per 1k

They just didn't import all that many in that caliber. So the demand for ammo is less. You know a good LEE Enfield is as good today as it was 130 yrs. ago. So is a good 30-30.

It's run what you brung. I just put an old .32 Auto in the upper compartment in my new/old Chevy. Available in an instant. It's only a 5-shot but it works, every time. A $200 gun I paid $150 for.

I have seen some bulk .30-06 for sale. I used to have a Remington 742 with a 10-shot mag, baby BAR. A .270 or whatever you got would do nicely too. Heck I have several .38-40's that can haul the mail. How many souls worth of ammo do I need?

If I take a notion to load some up I can play a good while.

Picked up a few of those 5.45x39 rounds at range once

Neat little Russian round.

There are several neat rounds based on the 7.62x39

That 5.45 .22 is one and .22 PPC or .220, and 6mm Russian. There is a 9X39mm that is actually a 9.3 or .366" round. It shoots a whole assortment of specialty rounds for the Russian special forces, mostly very heavy subsonic applications. Roman wanted one but I got a .450 Bushmaster first and we just have not gotten around to it in rotation.

They have some very cool stuff now. One rifle larger than an AK has a geared rod or counterweight that shoots forward at the same time the bolt is launched rearward. This totally cancels out recoil forces and in full auto no less.

I just bought

A Ruger American in 7.62x39. I have yet to shoot it but ammo is super plentiful and it is a good defensive round even on a bolt action. I have a 1-4 leupold scope on it and 1000 rounds of ammo. I will see how it shoots but this far I like the gun scope combo. I would like a set of open sights. As “incase” insurance. Over all a really nice gun.

Millett used to make these 1" rings that basically had

handgun sights dovetailed into the top of them. I have found several sets on Ebay and Gunbroker for $25 or so. IF the scope turret is not too tall, like a Leupold etc. (they work really well but others do too) you can see right over the top of them and shoot irons. They work perfectly. Two versions, one with a fully adjustable rear and the other with a drift windage "fixed" rear. For lack of a better description. THe front is made into the front ring but you can grind it down to raise impact.

I have bought the rings and swapped tops on another Millett ringset to "make" the combo I needed. It could easily work on the Ranch gun. No real metal mods and for way less than $50 you are cooking with gas.

This is a set on one of my big bore Reeder's, a .450 GNR Encore. *Bottom is a .429 GNR tube with a 30mm 2X Tasco.

just watch the steel cased ammo. They can sure ruin a feed

ramp and chamber. We get rifles in all the time with scoured chambers and gouged feed ramps from the steel cased stuff. It is cheap but you get what you pay for. Some of the steel cased stuff has a lacquer finish that gums up a chamber sorta like the old moly coated bullets used to. Other brands are just rough and will really rough up a chamber. If there is dirt or sand in the air or a bit on the cases, the steel case will embed that in your chamber whereas the brass case stuff will embed the sand grains in the brass and eject it with the fired case.
It is your gun and ammo but personally I would never ever run steel cased ammo in any of my guns.

Thanks for the info! I have tried steel cased ammo

in the past and just didn't care for it. I knew the lacquer could gum things up but didn't know the cases could just wear stuff out. That's all I need to know to stay away...

You know that 5.4 Ak74 I don’t think

They have ever made brass case normal ammo for it. Don’t think they’ve imported any. It shoots a longer bullet than a 5.56 which has been engineered to yaw and tumble upon impact. Russians you know. All the ammo I’ve found for it is steel case. I’ve reloaded a few .45 ACP and I remember a couple .30 Carbine (I think) steel cased ammo just to see if I could do it. It worked fine but I did not continue the practice for fear I’d die wear. I only had a couple cases and noted they were boxer primed. Just goofing around.
