Single Action Revolver ... namely a Ruger Single Six. They will fire most any ammo ... mine fires both Magnum and regular Long Rifle from the same cylinder, having one chamber reamed to 22 Magnum.

They can be kept running with most parts missing if you have a few rubber bands.

I remember my Dad shooting pigeon off the roof of our house when I was a kid. We had it for supper. He used an old single action .22 with a rubber band for a hammer spring, lined the cylinder up by hand, and slipped the hammer because it had no trigger.

When things start breaking down you want the simplest that is available.
