out of Adak right after we retook it from the Japs. He won the Air Medal there for jumping into the ocean and rescuing a downed pilot and then getting back on the PBY and flying it back to Adak. He always was a quiet man and didn't talk much until he became an Episcopal minister. Then he would only talk about God and never about WWII. I used to ask him what his sermon for Sunday was going to be and his answer was always the same "Sin, I'm against it."
My Dad also stationed at Adak

My Dad was at Adak during WWII... he told me of a time when the Japanese attacked and all those there had to flee into the hills... no food or water for a while. He was a mechanic on a PBY.

I couldn't find it but I know I've got an issue of Hunt Alaska magazine (great mag BTW, only comes out 3x a year, there's a Fish Alaska mag too that Al Goerg's son is/was Editor for) where there was an article on Caribou hunting on Adak. If I remember correctly, they were imported around WWII to give the soldiers some fresh meat and hunting opportunities.
