357 magnum load that will NOT blow apart a S&W 586? I was looking at using Sierra soft point #8340 bullets and I was thinking of using 16.6 grains of Win 296. That should give me a safe 1200 fps with the 158 grain JSP. Thanks in advance.

of H110 and 1 pound of Win 296. My LGS is out of Win 296 and is holding a pound of H110 for me. He has no 2400 so that one is out. Huey could you tell me more about your load? Is it a compressed load at 18 grains, I don't think so but this is my first go round with 357 and since it is a souped up 38 on the pressure curves I want to approach any load carefully. Thanks
Sorry that was Alcorn and not Huey.

Sierra Edition 5 second printing manual I have lists for a 158 grain JSP; W296 start load 15.9 and stop 17.3; H110 start 13.3 and stop of 16.3. NOT the same. I looked at the Hodgdon Reload Center on line and got start loads of 15 grains and stop loads of 16.7 on both powders. This is the cause of my confusion as the Hornady, Speer, Lee and Lyman manuals I have all list different start/stop loads with a 158 grain bullet. Since a few tenths of powder could cause an over pressure that would be UN-GOOD, I wanted to approach this round with a lot of caution, hence my question. Would 15.5 grains of either powder be a good starting point?

POWDERS ARE THEIRS. IF A FEW TENTHS WOULD CAUSE OVER PRESSURE LOADS YOU ARE ALREADY TOO HIGH.
Amen. And some manuals are prone to make mistakes. Look at

look at their data. They normally don't favor any one certain bullet or powder as they don't make either. But they do give you more info down at the bottom of the page. Also whichever book you look at, take a look at what gun they are shooting and getting the data with. Quite often they don't use a gun at all and use a universal receiver which isn't a gun at all. And that can make a big difference in the printed data. I have always been partial to Sierra handgun bullets and tend to use their data if it is available.
