Derek's post below reminded me of
A story I read as a kid back in the 50's or 60's. JT or Jim may recall the story about a rogue grizzly up in the northern US around the turn of the century (1900). Montana or the Dakotas maybe. Anyway this bear was wandering from ranch to ranch just wantonly slaughtering sheep and cattle. One eye witness reported watching this old griz running through a whole herd of sheep slaughtering 30 or so and leaving them on the ground. They had hired professional hunters with the best equipment available at the time to hunt it down and it. Many shot it but never killed it. If I remember correctly, a rancher finally shot it and killed it with a 30-30. When necropsied, the bear had something like 38 expended rounds in its carcass. Some 45/70 and other "high power" calibers for the time.
