I love the history of it, actually.

The origins are obviously the earliest transition from literally "Hand Cannon" which was the very first hand fired weapons, a touch hole fired small cannon on a short pole or stick. When the lock mechanisms were invented, Dog, Wheel, Match etc., it became to possible to have handier arms. The "stick" was mostly dispensed, except for holding the barrel and firing mechanism in close proximity. We now call that the "stock". This transition is the very first reference to "Pistol" or hand fired "Gun".

The later revolving barrels and Sam Colt's patented revolving chamber cylinder must have been where the "Revolver" term came from and eventually was generically coined.

It's tongue in cheek but if one enjoys splitting hairs, and many seem to be so inclined, there is now a distinction between "pistol" and "revolver". It is even specified in state laws relating to CCL protocol. A semi-auto "pistol" or training certified specifically with the "revolver". It's that way in Arkansas, hey, I don't make the rules.

Too much information and too anal retentive to be truly moot. But there is some historical points to consider for your personal views. Nobody is ever too wrong among good friends, it's not allowed.
