Finale of a fantasy...

It is interesting to pipe dream. Knowing full well I'd likely not carry anything out further. But I've really had fun tinkering and figuring, that part is real and it does not cost anything. I make no claim to the idea, others have voiced it previously, although it's rare. A .44 Special semi-auto 1911, the ".44 Special Auto"?

My vision would be a (maybe lightweight) Commander chassis, regulated to shoot 240 gr. bullets at around 900-1000 fps. Maybe a custom recoil spring set up regulated to the duty.

Many of the sharp Misfits and our fearless leader instantly opined a necked up .400 Corbon would be the correct avenue. I wholeheartedly agree. It stops several issues before they become problems. Namely mis-identification and magazine binding with the tapered case. I mock tested the theory to great satisfaction. The cartridges align in the .45 magazines perfectly and feed slick as butter. Capacity is more than sufficient for the task. *One SERIOUS consideration is the reamer made with more than generous throating to permit revolver SWC bullets to easily enter the chamber. This is critical and often messed up by knowledgeable reamer makers! Nothing at all wrong with a Weatherby'ish freebore.

My fantasy led me to investigate how one might go about getting a .429" 1911 barrel. Stubbing is plausible but expensive. Getting the South Koreans or Philippines to help is also possible but would require more than I could manage. This leaves "relining". Almost a do it yourself project if you have mechanical aptitude and some machines. Not all that ideal but it would work, has it has in the past. That, and custom dies that are expensive and long coming. It could be done but would cost into four digits to get it accomplished. I'm not likely to pursue further but sure have had fun speculating. I'd be delighted if one day someone carried the torch into fruition. Just because I like the .44!

Cartridges compared; 230 gr. .451 ball to the .430" Sierra 240 gr. Silhouette bulleted mock .44 Special Auto.

that is real interesting--I think the bottle neck rounds are

Daydreaming when i was a kid, many days only on paper, I would come with many things. One time I knew that I had come up with something great, the 38-40 Auto, a 45 acp necked down to .400/10mm, was a marvelous thought in my mind! LOL! Maybe if whomever made it before I was able to, hadn't named it the 400 Corbon it would have been all the rage!

You could probably shorten 429 GNR Dies...

And they'd work. Barrels would be the issue.

How about you load up some 452423, close your eyes and

Forget about that extra 20 thousandths. Lol

What is 35 Remington brass like cut off that short? Probably need reamed

Lol, what a boring world that would be.

I’m very fond of the 200 gr. SWC in .45 ACP at around 1000 fps. Plenty powerful and a little softer shooting. BTW that’s also my favored .40 S&W loading and performance level. I need a couple hundred fps with my 10mm loads or why have it at all.

The charm of the .45 1911 is a more portable and compact version of the 1873 SA in Long Colt, same performance. The idea still is valid and sound.

don't give up Petunia. I am talking to Santa

so who knows.

Are you whispering in his ear about a 41 cal and 170 JHPs?

I forget the name. He offered barrels, a spring, and dies I think. Would love to have an outfit like that. You get to hopping things up, past the .45 ACP in bullet weight and speed and the dynamics change. Keep it in the ACP envelope and all is well up to +P territory.

Doug had some factory 185 gr. .45 ACP we clocked at 1100 fps!

no, that was J.D.'s 41 Avenger. I have thought several times

about re-working that cartridge to different specs to see if I could have better luck. But never got beyond the thinking part. I despise people that steal other folks hard work and ideas and if I reworked the cartridge would still be too close to J.D.'s 41 Avenger. That is why I will never carry a 300 Black Out rifle in my gun sharp. Those "people" at AAC blatantly stole J.D.'s 300 Whisper. I think they caught so much flack they eventually labeled it the 300 Black Out/300 Whisper. But that doesn't erase the fact that they stole the cartridge from J.D. Nuff said.

No one has moved on it. Sounds fun though.

I think .44 Boggs would sell. Catchy.

Never been a popular name; Cherokee Boggs

mediated treaties between the Indians and palefaces, that ultimately led to the Trail of Tears. One of the guys on "I Spy" was Boggs? I know on "RED", Bruce Willis' side kick Marvin was named Boggs (two movies - entertaining). Also there was an old movie called "The Great Lester Boggs" but I never saw it. I think one of Ulysses S. Grant's business partners in a General store was named Boggs too. We don't mention that much though.

Nah, some generic name might actually attract the interest of others. Something they can relate to.

Or .429 Boggs Special lol

Get a 400 Corbon barrel and have it reamed to 429.

Theoretically you then just need to finish ream the .429 chamber and be good to go, as long as everything else stays the same.

My question, is that shoulder enough to headspace on?

Amede

If so, then it would make it easy to use a lot of different revolver bullets in there and crimp appropriately. Just dont know if thats enough shoulder. Maybe, but you would have to take care in resizing.

Like the .357 SIG you headspace on the case mouth

They seemed to have figured that’s the best way. (?)

I guess for mass produced pistols and ammo

thats what you have to do. But even then variations in ammo and manufacturing allows some fudge factor. With a shoulder I would rather headspace on the shoulder and not worry about the case mouth. AKA any semi auto rife out there.

The accurate .38 Supers are supposed case head spaced.

I’ve read that. I’ve shied from the .357 SIG but it seems to work. Many State Police agencies actually issue it. It was interesting they chose to case mouth headspace. I don’t waste time second guessing Germans anymore. Whatever the book says I just do it, and it seems to get it done.

the State Police people don't know what a headspece

is. They bought the 357 Sig because it was the lowest bidder.

WB l really like your idea of the 44 special auto hopefully someone can custom make one some day. I know i would be standing in line to get one.
I have always been partial to 44 cal and 41 cal handguns.

Conversion barrel for a Glock 21 maybe

It’s just a barrel change for a G21. I have a custom

G21 that I have adaptive packages where I can shoot .45 ACP, .460/.45 Super, 10mm, .40 S&W, and 9mm Luger. It can also shoot about anything else with custom barrels and work such as 9x23 Win., .357 SIG, .45 GAP, 9x21 Largo etc. I’d love to have a 7.62x25 Tok barrel for it.

A Glock armorer would shoot you on the spot for just hinting at any of that. But a determined man can install windshield wipers on a goat’s butt, AND make them work!
