real tent. Just a lean to. And you are supposed to wait until there is a foot of snow on the ground. Al Goerg may come to you tonight about midnight to have a talk with you.

Once a man gets it it seems he cannot think of much else. How in the world he got all that heavy waxed canvas up that mountain? Horses? I remember reading how he hunted with an overnight kit. So he could chase quarry and spend the night out on the trail if he had to. Pretty serious stuff if a storm came in. No way to know back then, no really portable radios for the masses. A man had to read the signs.
He had larger base camps and then smaller hunting camps. There is one book I have where it is all about camping, some using a car as base. He was very detailed and all inclusive. Seems he liked camp cooking and eating too.
I would give WB's left nut to be able to hunt

remember right it was polypropylene or some other "plastic" tarp. He did mention several times it was just a 9X9 tarp. And he hunted a lot in a downpour and on several of his bear hunts he stayed soaked all the time.He hunted mostly Alaska and that usually meant he was hunting in rain or snow. I talked at length with his son when he came down here for the "Al Goerg Memorial Hunt" and he mentioned how his Dad really roughed it. But again back in the late 50s and early 60s if you wanted to hunt Big Horn Sheep, Mountain Goat, bull elk or any of the other big game species you pretty much had to rough it.
On his food he ate whatever he shot that day, whether Ptarmigan, Goat, Sheep, whatever and he used a lot of freeze dried puddings and such.
his "necessary" items for his hunts.

This included a 9X9 neoprene/nylon tarp. down mummy bag, dehydrated food, bone saw, skinning knife, and a handgun.
I am thinking about that set up...

Right now day one of NH black bear hunt is over. I brought a lot of stuff and it is a pain to set up. I like that run and gun ultralight method he used.
If you think about it, he pioneered not only handgun hunting but ultralight hunting as well.
Etowah makes ultralight silicon nylon tarps . Get a nice 10 or 12 tarp along with a super light cook set and you’re good to go.
John this what I use for supper light weight

The gatewood cape. Better than a poncho in every way.

It also makes a nice ground blind shelter if you get caught in bad weather
Out on a hunt.
I like that
