MY FAVORITE PENNED WORDS CAME FROM
Tuesday, September 08, 2020, 12:28

In 1966 my friend the late John Lachuk wrote these words: “If I had my druthers, I’d take this handy lever-gun and my 44 Maggie and head for the backcountry!” He was talking about the newly introduced Marlin 336T chambered in .44 Magnum. He went on to say: “One-caliber rifle-pistol duos are a Western tradition, handed down from the days when ammo counters were few and far between.” Little did I know that I would not only meet John in the future but also become good friends. This line certainly fed my imagination and I read it just before I packed up our three pre-school age kids, hooked a U-Haul to the back of our 1965 Ford Station Wagon and Diamond Dot and I headed for Idaho. Shortly after arriving here I put feet to John’s words and purchased my own Marlin .44 Magnum so I can definitely say just as John Lachuk’s words if I had my choice I just as soon grab my .44 Magnum Marlin and a good .44 sixgun and head for the mountains which is exactly what I did for many years before the mountains became too steep.
