Still Hunting " pistol-handgun"?

In the Northeastern US, specifically Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and I will include the NY Adirondacks there exists a style of hunting where you track down your deer.

As a rule there is some snow in the remote areas of these states where you basically do a slow stalk of a set of tracks until you get a shot.

Some hunters like the Hal Blood, The Benoit family and the Bernier family have developed an almost cult like following among northeastern hunters.

The most common hunting gun for those guys is a Remington pump action rifle in 270,308 or 3006 with a peep or red dot sight.

Now.

I was thinking and maybe I do too much of that, what would be a good "stalking handgun"?

All of those states allow handgun hunting( well NY does if you are a resident and get the permit) thus one can lawfully hunt whitetail deer and other game with a handgun.

What would you use for such a hunt? Thanks for any replies.
