I e-mailed J.D. Jones and asked him if he was dead, as the rumors indicated. Here is his response...

Nah just more BS. Early last winter it was going around I was dead—however for the fourth time on the internet.
Always figured a competitor might have started it. You can figure the most likely. We. finally retired except for getting rid of a lot of guns I don’t have room for. Now for about two weeks living in Phx about 15 minutes from Ben Avery range. Small subdivision in the Sonora desert— Still moving in of course and waiting on furniture. Been too hot to do much.

Actually I’m in good shape except for COPD which I’ve had for 25 years or so and it hasn’t changed much. When thing get settled I intend to come up and visit. Hope you and your family are doing OK. Thanks for the contact— JD
