SBH vs. Model 29

Is the Super Blackhawk a bit stronger and better built that the Model 29? I would like to have a Redhawk but already have the SBH and a Model 29. The 29 is -3 version. Would use for backwoods carry & black bear defense if ever needed in Colorado and Wyoming. Don't really want to trade either for the Redhawk and don't feel like just buying a Redhawk when I already have 2 .44 magnums, 4" and 4 5/8"

Definitely stronger, but wouldn't say better built..

Different model guns are simply, different.

The SBH will take some serious loads. Lots of great factory heavy duty loads available too.

I don't have a model 29 but I do have

both a SRH and a RH. I love both. The SRH has a 2X7 Burris mounted on it and it is super accurate as far as I can shoot with it. The RedHawk is also very accurate but I chose to keep it without a scope as I carry it for both hunting and personal defense. Never can tell when you might run into a zombie with a big appetite.... I do find the RedHawk is easier to carry in a holster so I have a sling on the SBH. I have been looking at a Model 29 for sometime but other things keep getting in the way and I have 5 44 magnums as it is. Try one and see if you like it..

Should have been SRH instead of SBH. I

really need to proof read before posting.

I've had a Ruger SBH in .44 all my adult shooting life.

It was the first real gun I bought with my own money from working and getting a printed paycheck. Later when I could afford it I bought a M29, then a 629. I've had several of them too. My last one was a 5" full lug 629, I kind of wish I had it back. Traded it in on a BMW motorcycle. Even then I still kept a SBH. I never liked the grip though. It looks cool but my hand never finds a sweet spot on it, the square back always whacked my knuckle and I have smaller hands! So I fixed mine. The wider hammer, unfluted cylinder, and grooved trigger are subtle things that make it a SBH. It feels like a SBH that I can hold on to. It hearkens to my youth and still gets it done.

The S&W is nice, get one too if you can. But I'll always keep a SBH.

Good looking Sbh!

A SBH is a must. I had a line bored 44-40 Cylinder

Added to mine. Slightly oversized to maintain the same outside wall thickness as the 44 Magnum Cylinder.

Also, the chambers were custom cut for .431" bullets seated in Starline Brass.

ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THIS?? THE .44-40

OD IS ABOUT THE SAME AS A .45 COLT. IT WOULD TAKE MORE THAN "SLIGHTLY OVER-SIZED".

We measured the brass before starting the project...

Starline 44-40 brass was .462" on the base. That put it .006" larger than the 44 Magnum brass we measured. I thought it was closer to 45 Colt too.

That made it .003" larger on the radius. The existing cylinder window allowed us to put a .008" larger diameter cylinder without opening the window.

In the end, thickness at the bottom of the lock notch was .002" more on the 44-40 cylinder than the factory 44 Magnum cylinder.

I still limit my 44-4O loads to 30k out of respect for the thinner cases.

I bored out a .44 Mag cylinder to .44-40

The throats were .430-.431. Shoots great, and I’ve done very naughty things.

Starline Brass was quite a bit smaller than drawings...

If I remember correctly, .008-.009" smaller.

I suppose base diameter has fluctuated through the years just like neck and throat measurements.

I bought 1,000 rds of brass just in case it changes over time. But, not even guaranteed all of mine came from the same batch.

No problems loading so far...

This is a real 44/40 Ruger

Old Vaquero .44/40 NRA Commemorative edition, from somewhere back in the '90s, I reckon (not bothering to do easy research). Had Gary do a PPP and put his sight base on it. Have an UltraDot mounted. Might look silly to some but it shoots like a dream.

Cool, mine goes well with my very slicked up Marlin 1894 CB

the 44s, Sleek and extremely nice in the hand. I own several and Colleen has her favorite 4" model 29. The Redhawk is the work horse, or Clydesdale. Beefy and almost indestructible (nothing is idiot proof), and I put the SBH in the middle. Back a hundred years ago I started in silhouette shooting and used a 44 Super Blackhawk. For those 200 meter rams I loaded it up pretty stiff with some of Lee Jurras' favorite loads. Once a year I would send it back to Ruger to bring it back into specs from the battering during the past year.
What this drivel comes down to is each have their own characteristics and their own good and maybe not quite so good points. But I sure shot a lot of them thru the years. I still have several 29s and 629s but over the past few years I have carried my custom 429 GNR on my hip when hunting. Sort of my 44 Magnum Magnum.

as a general pack gun. I like them all though and would be hard pressed to pick one over the other unless there’s a specific task in mind. I have a 429 Gary built my me on a SBH, a 29, a 69 and even a CA Bulldog. Great fun!

How do you like that gun?

I have handled it and have seen good reports. I trust someone's first hand experience. Thank you

I like it quite a lot. It’s accurate and handy. It points

well and is just right for me in regard to weight. At the range I shoot 240gr bullets over 9.5gr of Longshot for 1k fps. If hunting I might use 21gr of 2400 for 1210fps or just use the Longshot load. Interestingly, 23 he of h110 gave 1168fps and a lot more blast and recoil. The recoil is stiff but not ridiculous, you could control it without problem. I have no intention of replacing the factory rubber grip. I like the SW adjustable sights as well.

It’s a keeper for sure!!
