I bought my daughter a Marlin 336 ( curly maple) for Christmas ( GOD help us we still have one) and I am looking for ammo. The Hornady Leverevolution was my first choice , but can't find any. I read that pointed bullets are bad in a tube fed gun. Everybody has their own opinion. 30-30 ammo is scarce and I was wondering what factory ammo would be good. What say the MISFITS?
Pointed bullets in a tubular magazine isn't opinion...

The Hornady ammo has a flexible tip so it doesn't work like a firing pin against a primer.
There are lots of great choices for 30-30 ammo that's safe.

If you reload Midway had a few suitable bullets
I got three boxes of 140 grain Hornady

monoflex bullets especially for my 30-30. They have the flex tip the same as the Hornady Leverevolution ammo. I have loaded 15 rounds for different velocities and grouping at the range, nut have not been over to Swan Creek range yet to crony them and get groupings. Midway also have 30-30 brass last time I checked.
there is a huge run on 30-30 ammo right now

people are scared and many can't afford a new gun so they are pulling Winchesters and Marlin 30-30s out of closets and running in to their gun shops buying ammo. We had 12 boxes of 30-30 ammo that we got from a distributor a few months back. It had been sitting in the back due to the shelves being full of other ammo. Colleen put it out while we were gone to the HHC it went in 2 days.
That really makes good sense...

There is nothing wrong with flat points

Actually they are likely the most effective bullets for the cartridge, since they were designed specifically for the 30-30 over the last 100 years.
A flat point typically punches a hole to penetrate more straight than a pointed tip (lead) which can rivet and turn. Even round noses can tumble, but add a flat tip and it transforms. (Like GNR's flat tip .22 tool) The 150 gr. has a slight velocity advantage over the 170 gr. but a critter will not complain. The heavier slug has a better ballistic coefficient and will retain downrange velocity better and have an edge in penetration too. At least according to mathematics.
The .30-30 is no cannon, but perfectly capable of taking most non-dangerous game out to 200, maybe even 250 yds. if you can hit with it. I once blew a stale can of beer at 200 yds. with a stranger's Marlin 336, on a dare, in front of many witnesses to show the .30-30 an effective Southern deer gun to 1/8 mile at the least. I had a bit of luck too. I've loaded some pointed 150 gr. bullets to single feed, more because of the fact that the lever gun will not tolerate a very much longer cartridge than factory .30-30 flat points.
I'd certainly not fret over any available rounds I could currently find to use. The 170 gr. Flat point cast gas check is a real delight too.

I managed to get 200 rds of Private Partizan 150gr FSP at SGAMMO. Probably shoot these up and reload with flat tops or the Hornady polymer FTX. thanks for all the input!!
