Bear country, assuming using hot heavy loading?

A little on the light side—IMHO

You CAN get 10mm specialty rounds with 220 gr. at 1300 fps.

And it holds 15 of them. You could do worse. I'm not real keep on toe to toe with any Bear with less than a very BIG rifle. The AK guides tell me you only have ONE shot. Several have said the same thing to me.

I agree with Sean. The 10mm is a great cartrdge

and one of my favorites but it is not a bear or elk cartridge. It would be fine for a black bear if he was treed by dogs but a bear has a thick skin plus usually about 3 to 4 inches of fat under the skin and that bullet has to go thru all that to get to the vitals.
And those guys in Alaska that recommend the 10mm need to stop their drinking. I hunt Alaska and I have never seen a 10mm handgun on any guide's hip. Most that I know of start with a 454 and go up from there. The handgun they carry is to get them out of a bad situation where the client has wounded or just pissed off a Grizzly or Brown Bear and a 10mm won't fill that need.

I am not saying it

is right or wrong, do what you are comfortable with. It does however seem to be the gun of choice in Alaska, again, not saying it is right or wrong.

Just got a G20SF in case an elk hunt comes true!

Trying to swing a 10 day Elk hunt in Montana and figured it would be a good chest carry handgun just in case. I like the idea of many heavy rounds, fast!

I'd go 45 SUPER over a 10mm

in bear encounters. Most guys choose it because it has decent power, Glock 20s are relatively inexpensive and easy to wear in a holster and you get a 15 rd magazine. It's mostly a practical choice in a pistol.
