I know handguns are the thing here, but I think this is a neat piece for me. Its a VZ 24 in 8mm Mauser. The fella selling it from an old local family whose known my people forever. The owner said the gun was bought by his father from the (only) local gun smith. The LGS was buying milsurp rifles and sportering them out for hunters. He cut the stocks and topped them with a Herter's 4x scope. And he sent them out with Lee loader. Not collectible, not special, but neat little bit of local gun history.

I've always liked the feel of those old mausers

It has a fluted stainless med.weight sporter barrel, welded bolt, the safety thing, drilled and tapped for modern scope. But the trigger guard and floor plate still has the Waffen stamps on it. She's a smooth shooter.

My other custom is a .30-06 on a 1908 DWM action done for the Brazilian Army prior to WWI. That's the only Mauser part on it, the frame. The guard and floor plate is re-worked 1909 hinged. As you can tell I like Mauser 98's. I think we have a Turkish 8mm around her someplace.

Two of my buck list items

,.. but way down on the list is a nice custom 30-06 on a German M98 action. I'd even possibly go 8mm-06 and keep the military stepped barrel if it was a really nice gun. My other milsurp dream sporter is a sportered up Enfield in 303 made up like a knock off Lee Speed with a really shot mag. I've let a few nice enfields go before that "ah ha" moment.
