I've been looking for a somewhat obscure rifle/cartridge

I'm looking for a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 9.3x62. I think it's a good looking rifle and I like that it chambered in something other than the mainstream cartridges, like 6.5 CM - it seems like that's all I see these days. I know the 9.3x62 is quite popular among some but certainly not in my generation of millennials.

Anyway, I saw all this to say, I walked into a LGS in search of this rifle, and upon stepping through the door a Redhawk in a display case caught my eye. I walked over to check the price and the label said it was a Ruger Blackhawk... I told a clerk that the price seems a bit steep for a single action (jokingly hinting at the mistake) and I was told it was because it was a hunter model (it was not). I then asked about a Ruger no. 1 that was hanging on the wall and the clerk said "that lever action is chambered in 30-30 I believe." Wow, you don't see many Ruger lever actions (he again missed the hint).
Poor guy, caught up in all the "tacticool" hype of guns, he was nice enough but I did not buy anything.

I'm not intending to degrade this guy or shop in anyway but thought it was funny.

9.3x62 is a power house that dates to 1905

Been thinking about one of those myself. Something different, I know Mauser and Tikka chambers rifles for it. Could always have a Tc barrel made up with fiber optic sights, and drilled and tapped for red dot or scope.
Been reading about that round from Bob Mitchell up in Canada (Loving the Big Bang) for a long time.

Doug has a Blazer in 9.3x62 we shot a bit

Of course superb accuracy and it shoots a .366" bullet of 286 grs. at around 2300 fps. You know you touched something off! I've heard some folks compare it to a .358 Winchester. I think the .358 with the older 250 gr. loading was pretty salty. The 9.3 seems in the hunt with the .35 Whelen and .375 H&H. I think there is a 225 gr. 9.3 load at around 2600 fps or more.

Bottom line, it can still carry the mail.

I think Doug brought that gun to Africa in

2018 with my group. If so I am not sure what all he shot with it. Here are some of Doug's critters.

a drilling in 9.3 X 74, 16 gauge and 22 Magnum. I put a 22 Magnum insert in one of the 16 gauge barrels which gave me 3 calibers to choose from. I shot 1 of my caribou with the 9.3 X 74 barrel, shot a couple of Ptarmigan with the 16 gauge, and shot an Arctic fox with the 22 Magnum barrel. One of the very few hunts where I didn't use a handgun. The drilling was from before WW2 so it was sort of a special gun for a special hunt. I also shot my second Caribou with a custom Ruger #1 in 45-70. It was fun but didn't have the class of the drilling. The hunt was a self guided hunt. We flew into Quebec/Labrador and took a float plane to a small spit of land where the Caribou were traveling on their yearly migration. We did everything ourselves from finding the caribou which was no problem. We must have seen 5000 Caribou over the week we were there. We took freeze dried veggies and coffee and used the meat off the first Caribou for the rest of the food. We got to be pure slobs and didn't have to clean up the tent we stayed in or anything. It was all in all a great hunt and I would love to go back one day. There were 6 of us in a large tent and got snowed in the 4th or 5th day. We flew in float planes to the camp. Otter or Beaver, don't remember which. A great time.

Take a look at the 338/06 or 338/06 Ackley Improved. You will have more bullet options. I can attest that it is a great cartridge, I have had several over the years.

I love the ackley calibers. The only issue

you might consider is using them in repeaters. Specifically bolt actions. A gun that chambers the standard version ctg. will be very rough trying to manage the same with the case blown straight sided and a sharp shoulder. Conversely one modified to smoothly feed the Ackley might not feed the std. ctg. any more.

My 6mm Ackley has stock action feed rails. That is to day they are still for the 8x57 Mauser. It feeds the 6mm Remington very slick as that round is basically the 7x57 (whose parent is the 8x57). But you have to force it a bit with the Ackley rounds. For the single shot this matters none.

Gunsmiths that have the knowledge to alter feed rails on Mausers are getting few and far in between. Much less those who take too much off and are able to put it back on and start over. The old guys could do about anything. Also spending $200 to get a rifle to feed smooth may not be truly cost effective. No one worthy works cheap.

Have a 338/06 AI encore

the 9.3 X 62 is the only caliber allowed in Africa

for dangerous game (big 5) that is under 375 caliber. It was also Jack O'Conner's favorite caliber ( he never really used the 270 on all his hunts but that is another story).

we built several custom 9.3 X 62 rifles in our African

Classic series a while back. The gun was real popular in the more modern calibers but wasn't a big seller in the 275 Rigby (7mm Mauser) or the 9.3 X 62.Colleen took her rifle in 275 Rigby to Africa and took several plains game animals with it.
