So,. here's the story,.. but I think its even more interesting.

The local gun smith actually taught a gunsmithing class at night at the local tech school and this gun was the class project. The owner's father just liked guns and shooting and took the class. They completely disassembled the gun and put it back together customizing as the went. The barrel is re-crowned, the iron sights removed, it has a Timney trigger and a an aftermarket safety. I got bullets, dies, brass, and the Lee Loader for a pretty nice price.

Nothing special, but a neat story. And all I need to shoot is powder and primers, which I have.

it's almost a "saddle gun" M98. The 8mm is a great round and has no flies on it. The 8mm-06 was a popular conversion and almost the full equal of the .338-06 and .35 Whelen with heavier bullets in the 200-225 gr. class. The stock 8x57 can be hotted up quite a bit and safely.

My two custom M98's. One mild the other wild.

I still have not checkered the stock on the .30-06. I may never get to it.

Over the years I sure have pissed away lots of money trying to get a custom M98, when I could have just bought a perfectly fine rifle off the shelf. Best to let others do the work for you and swoop in after it's all depreciated. Many, many, fine semi-customs with hundreds of dollars of work done to them (by today's rates) from the 40, 50's, and 60's.

I had hoped it had been chamered for '06 brass

But with all the brass I got I really happy.

I was surprise how well the line up on the scope is with the military stock. The gun handles well.

Your 30-06 is super nice. I like that. I like it with no checkering.

I'd love to find a M98 custom with some wear at a nice price. If all I had to do was get some refinish work done, I'd be a happy to do it.

A lot fo the new kids don't want fine old arms

They want the trendy black plastic stuff and would turn their nose up at a fine old KRAG or Springield custom. I see things like .308 Norma and such that seem hard to sell. A real fine cartridge and usually in a gun someone spent a considerable amount to get to suit them. Likely they used it a lifetime and it got passed on to someone who didn't care.

You can tell quality when you see it.
