this is the best target of the day ...

Looks like I got the barrel screwed in pretty good as far as sight alignment. The gun shows some promise so I will see what I can get it to do.

I tried some 16o gr. wadcutters .. I loaded them over 4 gr. 231 ... they shot into about 4" at 25 yards. I tried them in my Model 340 S&W and 5 shots leaded the barrel nearly solid! So I guess I will try a couple different powder charges and see if I can get them to work. Maybe I was pushing them too hard? I will go with Bullseye as it has always worked for me.

Sounds like the alloy was funky, too soft/hard?!

and see if I can get them to shoot. Otherwise they may get recycled into something else.

Before you recycle them...

Before you decide to recycle those 160 grain wadcutters, coat them with Lee Liquid Alox tumble lube and try them again. This is my standard treatment for hard commercial bullets, and it usually eliminates leading. Easy to do and doesn't cost much. I tumble lube all commercial cast bullets these days and it has proven to work extremely well...

GREAT IDEA! I will try that.

Try Lyman #2 alloy.

I use it for everything. Killed a nice Fallow deer with LAR Grizzly in 45 Win mag at HHC. Used Lyman 454190 sized .450 with Lyman/ideal lube. Drove it 1400fps, about as fast as you can go without GC.

I use TLAR alloy. (That Looks About Right) LOL

That conjures up many naughty thoughts and deviations.

I can always find uses. Stick in muzzleloader sabots etc. lol. Maybe boil the lube off and powder coat...

I like JD’s easy idea best. Jim told me to try that with some nasty shooting Federal .22 LR I had leading up my guns. It fixed it like magic! Although my fingers smelled funny for a while after applying it to bunches of .22 rounds.

Yes .. it does work. I had not thought of it though.

I have started using it on almost every cast bullet.

Its almost as good as the powder coating. I was experiencing a bit of leading in a Ruger GP100 44 special with standard cast bullets. Went to using the Lee Alox and now it not only shoots better but the barrel is clean. Like WB says it also works well with muzzleloader bullets, and I use it on a 50 R.E.A.L. bullet.

Lol, I cut a mould and gas checked a REAL .50 cal.

I was not using it anyway. I shoot them from my .510 GNR revolver! What a fun light load, if there is such a thing in .51 cal.? I also shot it over 1600 fps from the revolver! LOL. Scared myself!

That’s always the ultimate option. Lol

I like those wad cutters that are dual ended, they shoot either way. Wadcutters smack hard within effective distances. I had a friend who always hits me up for loaded shooting rounds. He found a target of opportunity, a nice 8-pt. Whitetail at some 50 yds. distance. His arm was a Colt Trooper MKIII 6” that I traded to him our senior year of high school. However it was loaded with 148 gr. Bevel based wadcutters ahead of a charge of Unique. Likely 800-900 fps.

One handed, one shot to the neck vertebrae. It went down like it was hit by a truck. He ate it, all. The trophy head still adorns his wall some 30 yrs. later. It’s a prized handgun trophy. He has the wadcutter bullet found just under the off-side skin. Surprisingly it’s slightly “flaired” or expanded if you will. Small bits of bone still embedded in the lead.

The old Colt has served him well. However it tends to shoot its barrel slightly loose every dozen years or so. Coil spring action and some cast parts, purists snub them, but it’s done well.

Jim, I like the way you put the distance on the target. With the range known it gives one a better idea of the significance of the group. It looks like you have a shooter there. I always enjoy your posts and (especially) your stories.
