The Official Police is the Grandaddy of the Colt Python. It does not say that was the exact model used? If so it would have been .38 Special. Earlier Colt revolvers as those used by the military (1892 New Army DA) in the Philippines were indeed .38 Colt caliber, even more anemic for bear. However I have read some Eskimo’s using the .22 Hornet. I believe they use whatever they can get!
