I've never been a huge fan of the Remington Bolt Guns as I lean towards the none rotating Mauser Type Extractor. But, I own a few.

I bought the 700 Classics in 221 Fireball (2002) and 8x57 (2004).
They are really great shooting, well made guns.

The 8x57 was always my Dad's favorite rifle caliber. He went to his death bed believing nothing new followed the introduction of the Mauser 7.9mm.

He refused to acknowledge any case with a belt on it. In his world, they didn't exist.

I've never killed an animal with the 8x57 and that needs to be remedied. Bought a lifetime supply of Hornady 275 grn SST Bullets. Can push them to 2800 fps in the 700.

Gary and WB just made me think of the unsung rounds we have available. The old Mauser Rounds still get the job done.

175 grn SSTs. Posting from my phone...

Currently I own only one 700, Remington rifle. (Couple 1100's and some .22's) It's a Black Police special HB .308. And the 8mm is an old beater Turkish M98 Mauser. But I'm at least in the game.

I've had a bunch of each. I remember a M700 I had in .375 UM. Ouch! Doug probably still has the scar. "6 inches Doug, it comes back 6 inches, not 5". lol The last 8x57mm I had before was the gun I turned into the "Blue Gun". It was a VZ24 that someone had semi-sporterized and installed a 26" heavy 8x57 barrel on. I never figured that one out. I wanted to build a nice .257 rifle but they ran out of barrels. So I got one in 6mm. It's actually called a .244 Ackley but has the later 1:10" twist.

Man, That 375UM was horrible.,,.

Seemed to only weigh about 7 lbs with the scope and the BDL stock had varnish so thick the checkering was just for looks - slid right through my hands on recoil. Based on the impact to my eyebrow I can certainly vouch for the strength of the scope mount, so it had that going for it...

that sounds like the gun you need in Africa

in April.

Being basically a .404 Jeffery necked to .375

and Improved, it was quite the powerhouse. Not quite the .378 Wby. but close enough no one could really tell. They basically slapped that barrel on a standard chassis M700, a beast.

I sold it to a guy in AK who put a synthetic stock on it for his "fishing" gun. Very light and powerful, so he could carry it and fish alongside the big bears! He hoped he never had to shoot it.

the 378 Weatherby is not one of the favorites

in Africa. Too much speed for the bullets that are available. On an early hunt to Africa, in '92, Kase took a Ruger #1 we has chambered in 378 Weatherby. On a Common Reedbuck, maybe a 125 lb animal, the 270 grain bullet blew on impact. It went maybe 2" before coming apart.

He shot a Blue Wildebeest and the shots were good, just behind the shoulder, and it took 9 shots to put it down. All but 2 of the rounds blew up on the hide.
He shot an Impala with the 378 WBY and the same thing. Big nasty hole that was maybe a half inch deep with no penetration. It took a couple more shots to end it.

So the 378 Weatherby is not looked upon well in Africa.

I've had many 8x57 over the years and even one

1888 with a .318 bore. BTW it shot the factory Winchester .323 just fine. I passed on a European early sporter with dual triggers and one of those early post and cross hair scopes in that fancy quick detach mount. It was not exactly cheap but a buy for what it was, and the quality. No one wanted it because it was a 8x57J (not the .323 JS bore).

Most of my 8's were M98's that had been sporterized on some level. I've always wanted a nicely done 8mm-06. They were supposed to be quite popular but it seems the owners seldom sell them.

Just playing around with the 8mm Mauser myself.

I just picked up an old VZ24 with some attached goodies at a real nice price. I've loaded all the 150 grn bullets that cam with it. A real soft shooter with the loads the lee loader that came with it makes. I've been thinking that the sweet spot for this one is going to be 180 or 200 grn bullets. I'm enjoying this one.

Although a little pricey for a plinking round, the Nosler --

180gr ballistic tip bullets have been very accurate in both my Mausers.
