A few years ago I purchased a Miroku made 1895 405 Winchester lever action rifle. I shoot this rifle often and have pretty much fallen in love. Since purchasing I have fine tuned a load that works well on the range and also for hunting. I have taken an Oryx on the white sands and 3 elk with this rifle. My only issue now is my eyes. Unfortunately I'm getting old and the buckhorn sights on the 405 just aren't cutting the mustard. I would appreciate any suggestions/recommendations of after market sights that have been used by the Misfits. Pros and cons of installation and what works for you guys. Thanks.

I have the same problem with the Buckhorn Sights...

I just replaced the one on my Miroku Winchester 1892 with the Marble's Bullseye Sight. As simple as driving the old sight out and the new one in with a wooden dowel.

Skinner makes one a bit like that too, very easy.

I've been needing them on my Winchester and Rossi myself. On the 1895 it seems some advocate drilling and tapping the bolt right over the firing pin. I'd go for the dovetail swap rear sight first myself.

I could not drill and tap the Winchester...

Would love a receiver mounted peep sight. But, just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Thanks to all. Huey I think that I will try the Marble's first. I too have thought about the model 21 sight but tearing into the rifle is not what I want to do. Any other rifle, I would do it in a heartbeat but the 405 is special to me for a lot of reasons. Good memories and good hunts with friends that are not on this earth with me anymore.

Hope it works for both of us. I'm fixing to work loads...

For the Winchester 44-40. I managed to get the Missouri Bullets I wanted to try before they dropped most of their lineup.

Also, some from King's Bullets. Nothing can be found easily these days.

Most of their lineup indeed! I was shocked

when I saw what they were offering now. I am guessing they will add more offerings again if they ever get caught up...

Just received 2 different Skinner sights yesterday.

Installed the Skinner Guide sight on my .45-70 1895G this morning and hope to shoot it after work today. Really like the looks and ease of getting a fast sight picture!

Shot the Skinner sight! Wow!

My old eyes liked it! Shot a round and hit bottom of target, one rev up and hit 6” higher, 1 rev up and got it! 8 shots within a few inches! Only 25 yards but I left it there and have high hopes for longer range. Going to put the Skinner Alaskan on my 1895MXLR .450Marlin and give it a test run tomorrow!

You would prefer the alternative? Skinner Sights or a good receiver sight should solve your problem.

A good number of years ago I purchased the same rifle, but in 270 as the 405 was years to come. I had mine bored and rifled by the Late Richard Nickel to a 35 Whelen. I had installed, yes you will need to drill and tap, a Lyman 66 peep. I also installed a Marbles shorty ramp front so I could install a front sight that would work the best and I'd be able install at different heights. Currently shooting a cast 300 gr hollowpoint.
A sight that wasn't available to me at the time was the old Lyman, Pattern 21 rear. If I was to do it all over again that would be what I would have used.

I have seen a 1895 with a scout scope

Mounted to the barrel on a rail or a rib, like on a Ruger #1. It looked pretty good. Can’t say how well it worked

I put a replica Lyman 21 sight on mine..

I put a replica Lyman 21 sight on my 1895 in 30-06...

I'm very happy with and it looks like it belongs on the 1895. Works well and gives a much longer sight radius. I'm very happy with it....

3 times a day. I didn’t need reading glasses for a long time. I don’t remember how long ago Gary recommended that, but it really worked well. Just started needing reading glasses in the last few months.
