Would the Hornady 300 gr. XTP load in .454 Casull be sufficient for lower 48 grizzly bear. No question I would use hard cast if going to Alaska.
The plan is to get to MT/WY MAYBE this summer for some back
country fly fishing and camping.
Hornady makes two 300 grn XTPs...

One is the XTP Mag for the higher velocity of the 454 Casull. The other for 45 Colt and 45 Colt +P. I'd definitely want the thicker jacketed Mag Version if I were using it for critters that wanted to eat me.
here is the other side of that coin. A bear has a lot of fat

under a very thick hide. A hollow point will fill up with that fat and turn into a FMJ real quick. A grizzly is a grizzly whether he is a Montana Grizzly, an Alaskan Grizzly or a southern Louisiana grizzly. Use the best that you can get. A hard cast lead with gas check would be my choice. You want to break him down first and then kill him. And a hard cast lead will break him down quicker than a JHP and will penetrate deeper.
The Coonasses eat them before they get big here...

She is also frequently found running around with a fishing rod in her hand and couple of scraggly dogs in tow. On the other arm you will find a handsome fellow just proud to be along for the ride!
Well, that describes mine anyway.
It's slang from the French Word Connasse, so....

I'll let everyone look that up for themselves.
Ouch! I’m not going to show her that.
