30 GNR Carbine's first hunt.
Young, but a good sized 8pt. Rack a little past the ears.
100 yard shot give or take a yard. 150 gr soft point over 748. I didn't have any powders from the load book on hand and didn't have time for a lot of load development. So I called a friend and made some loads with powder off of his shelf. 4 groups of 5 cartridges in 1 gr increments until I Hit max. They all shot pretty well the same, so I made 10 at 1 grain under max. Zero'ed 2 inches high at 100 yards. Makes around 1.5" groups or a little bigger. No clover leafs but I can tell that I'll be able to make a good shooter out of this one. I'll spend some time with it in the spring and work on that gnat's ass accuracy. I have some other powders I want to try. The bullet didn't expand. Just went straight though. I would have expected some expansion. Didn't really matter though. He layed down about 25 yards away. This time I didn't sit around in the stand and wait. I knew the shot was good. Right in the shoulder. I walked out to the where he was shot. Only drips of blood. Just walked through the briars and old timber in the cut down and there he was. Just before dark. Had a heck of a time dragging him out over the old timber in the cut down. Cool thing, though. Everyone local kept saying the rut was over. I hadn't been seeing anything. This evening I started seeing deer at 4:30pm right up until dark. There were deer standing in the lane when I drug this one out of the woods and they were back again when I got back with the truck to load him up. And he was definitely rutting. The glands on his legs were stained and he stunk to high hell, too. Not to mention all the does I saw chased tonight.
Kept the head on this one. Going to try a DIY euro mount.
