I really liked this Smith but didn't think it would sell so high:
the gun isn't worth $1400. Some new people are getting into

guns and if a buddy tells them that is a good deal they go crazy until they have bought it. We are seeing that everyday at the shop. People bring guns into the shop that they just bought at a friend's recommendation asking us what we think of it and they tell us what they paid for it, which is usually at least 2 times retail.
That is high, I figured $750-800 was it's sell point

but no fair deals right now. It does have some pretty expensive barky stags worth a few hundred alone. The grip adapter and hammer itself are another $100-150. So the custom work, maybe action job, collectively add to the value IF that's what you wanted yourself. The 3" always commands a premium anyway.
Police trade ins are all over GB right now, beat up, and a bit raw in 4" HB (in .38 Special as a M64) for $400.
all those features add up to a bit over $350. The gun

itself should be in the $550 to $600 range MAX. Those features, just like putting new tires on a car you trade in. You get nothing for the tires. So being it is a used gun from 1981, even with the stag grips etc should sell for maybe $800. The strange thing is I would bet there were 2 guys bidding against each other and they were damned if they would let the other guy win the gun, even if they end up cutting their own throat.
I concour. That's the fun of auction. I've seen

rusty top break Hopkins & Allen .38's go for $300 at estate auctions for that very reason. I would not have given $50 for the H&A. Single barrel H&R .410 go for $200-300! People get crazy.
On GB they have a 15 minute rule. If ANYONE bids in the last 15 minutes of an auction it adds another 15 minutes until it eventually stops.
Wow
