Anyone know anything about the shortlived "White" ML

rifles? I ran across one in nice shape for cheap. It's a later "Lightning" model in stainless and painted wood stock. It says ".504" caliber. On the web and their old web articles they do not address this caliber's relation to "modern" sabot or normal in-line .50 cal. guns.

I have a good supply of plastic belted bullets in .50 cal. I'd buy it if I thought it would shoot them. Been looking at Knight's (not the ones requiring plastic adapters) and that CVA Optima V2 .50 cal. pistol. That's more like my style. Give me a holster or some ammo and I march off to go buy a gun to fit it.

Think they were meant for some big conicals

Only seen one White muzzle loader. It was a 45 cal that shot a big long conical.
Here is a link to a place that makes some.

So this is why they take "special" bullets.

Well, it was not obvious to me but I finally figured it out. Most ML in .50 are actually .500" groove diameter.

"It should be obvious that the DOC-designed .451 bore is merely a modern .458 barrel with 1-20 twist and .035″ grooves. Likewise the White .410, which is a modern .416 barrel with 1-16 twist and .035 grooves. The .504 is a modern .512 barrel with 1-24 twist and .004 grooves."

The .504" is the most narrow dimension, the largest "pin" gauge that would fit in his .512" bore. They use soft bullets that upset to fill the bore or sabots. His initial notes speak of his fascination with the Whitworth system. I can see now.

I have some fun things I want to try. My roots go back to ML, actually cap & ball revolvers. We talked our parents into getting us 1858 Remingtons for our 14th Christmas. It's not like it was a real gun or anything. LOL Boy were they surprised!

I'll email him with some intriguing questions. Many thanks!

Been watching some 1858s and 1851s on Gb
