Cleaning up the Mosin Nagant

I stripped it and got it pretty well cleaned up. The bolt closed with a lot of resistance when you had a cartridge in it. I traced that to the extractor. It was rough and not beveled correctly. Got that cleaned up and it sure works a lot smoother.

Made a gauge to check the firing pin protrusion. I never had one of the tools that were issued with these by the military. The tool has a gauge built into it. So I made one.

Loaded about 30 rounds for it. 15 with the 125 gr. .311" AK bullet and the rest with 170 gr. Sierra and 180 gr. Remington round-nose bullet. I loaded a few 125 gr. AK bullets with 8 gr. of Unique. They should be fun.

My son has one that was a Tula refurb

on the barrel. Then I turned down the area I cut until it looks like a barrel band.

I may cut the barrel off right at the band .. would make the barrel something like 17 1/2" long.

Tula was/is an outstanding Manufacturer since the days of the Tsar. I have an outstanding brass samovar made there. I also have a very well made Hungarian 9x18 imitation PPK as well, a nice little carry pistol, also well made. There were some Eastern bloc plants that made good quality guns and machines and some that made trash. You have to look for the good ones

I think that is the M38, We have M44's

Not the T-Chinese versions. I know Jim don't care and has a greater purpose, but to warn others. Those bayonet tabs he trimmed cost $100 each in value to the gun. You may not want to "modify" your gun if it is an investment project. Just saying. The 44's are running around $400 for a nice one.

I can remember when they were $50 each just a couple decades ago. SKS were $59 a copy, those ugly French guns that no one wanted too. All that has dried up globally and the collector market is back in swing.

Jim's gun is special to him and he's having fun with it. Keep us posted! Don't get upset if the bullets hit the target sideways. Surplus rifle loading can be a challenge and is often "fun".

We have two T-44's. They shoot a bit off

as I was told they are regulated to be fired with the folding bayonet in the fixed position. I have not tested that however. It was the very first high power rifle Roman ever fired. That single shot and the 4' plume of fire I captured in a pic cemented a love for Russian arms with him. He began a true interest in the history and designs for collecting and shooting. This has progressed now to the 7.62x39, 5.54x39, 9x18 Makarov (actually a 9.3mm), and 7.62x38R Nagant.
