Now all I can think of is the 1873 sporter 24” barrel and a Malcolm scope affixed! For my whole life I have get that a lever gun should not have a scope and the barrel needs to be 20” or less! In one sweep I could change that opinion!

I have also thought about Gary making me a mount for a Burris red dot that would fit on the barrel of one of my Rossi 92s just in front of the receiver. It would be small and light, but most importantly not get in the way of hand position while just carrying it.

16" Trapper and at the other end of the spectrum I have several 24" Octagon barreled Marlins him .30-30, .38-55, and .45-70 which are scoped and are my Long-Range Leverguns. When Winchester offered their 1894 in .45 Colt and .44 Magnum I got one of each and the latter is now my grandson in-laws #1 rifle.

The 24" 1873 jsut feels right and has good sight radius

It has some heft that keeps the front sight still in sighting. Feels like you have value for the money too. But a shorty 16" is just too handy, the 20" ain't bad either. They are so different in feel that a man can easily justify both!

In .45 Colt and .38 Special eventually proved to be overly heavy for my old arms. They are now 16" Trappers.

I haven't found that extra barrel length helps pistol rounds

In rifles anyways. I quit entertaining any over 20" when chambered in the short rounds.

Some even chronographed slower in the longer barrels.

The 250's that ran 950 in handguns went 1100 in the 24"

Forget what powders I was using around that time. I've played with Unique, 1680, and 4227 lately.

A 24" M1873 rifle weighs around 9 lbs. but the balance feels more like 7-1/2 to me. Trim.

Some guys here at work need to dispatch a little doe caught in the fenced area at one of our division sights before she gets out in the highway and causes an accident. Very risky. One of those would be perfect. I tried to steer them toward a shotgun with buckshot. Not sure what they have handy.

Some of mine lost from 40-70 fps going from 20" to 24"...

But, not with all powders.

Gary built me a 24" G2 Carbine in 38-40 that thrives on slow pistol/fast rifle powders.

Also, cast bullets loose less velocity due to the lube. Coated cast hold up great too.

Have seen the same ballistic drops in longer barrels on rimfires.

Yep. I have seen velocity drop in long barrels.
