I picked one up in some horse trading, figured I’d give it a try. If you have any favorite loads, I’d appreciate the guidance. Thanks.

WHAT IS A 480 R?? IF YOU MEAN

475 Linebaugh. The 475 is perfect for dangerous game and big bodied game but for most folks a bit much for deer, hogs and such. That is where the 480 Ruger comes to play.

The 325 gr. bullets are very adequate

The 400 in the .475 is a handful, but great if you need it. The lighter 325's for .480 spec. are just right.

I remember Mr. Taffin's book had some great .480 loads. If memory serves it was close to the same charge as a 250 gr. .45 Colt load! You'll need to look that up. I may have been looking at a load using Unique.

I think the 480 is very underrated.

Like Garys 510 GNR, it will do 90% of its big brother and is a bit easier for a light plinker load. I have a 325gr LBT load at 1350 fps that is pleasant to shoot and will kill anything that I would normally hunt. A 400gr LBT in the 11-1200fps range should handle anything else that you might want to go talk to. I have yet to try the Speer 275 GD bullets yet, but with Power Pro 300 MP there is a load where they get 1900 fps out of a 9.5" SRH!

Amede is right. I have seen quite a few bull elk taken

with the 510 GNR and the 350 grain LBT. I know of 2 young elephant bulls taken with a 510 GNR and a max load of 4227 under the 350 LBT. The elephant, although young, were still probably 3 or 4 tons each and had broken out of Kruger Nat. Park. The park rangers came to their camp and asked if anyone wanted to shoot ne of these bulls as they were destroying the area villages and crops. Two of the hunters each took one of the bulls with the 510 GNR and a max load. One with one shot and the other with 2 shots. The 510 GNR killed them as dead as a 500 Linebaugh would have. So like Amede mentioned the 510 GNR, like the 480 Ruger may not be the absolute max round in a handgun but if you put the bullet in the right spot they work every time.

Paco Kelly took a nice Gemsbok in South Africa with 480
