Snakes!
I was taught early to be respectful of snakes. As children we were constantly reminded to “Watch where you put your feet”. Also got instruction on where they might be. So today I can’t lift a sheet of tin or board or boat by the pond without thinking snake, and that is a good thing. But as long as I see one before I’m too close I don’t get too excited.
Here in Louisiana we have the big 3. Rattlers moccasins and copperheads. We also have the corral snake but few and far between. Yesterday I was in a store and an old guy asked had I been hunting and I confirmed I had. He went on about how he doesn’t hunt anymore because of how bad the rattle snakes have gotten. And it seems that everyone’s scared of the rattler and pass over the diminutive copperhead or disgusting moccasins. I have never been but but have nearly been several times and it was always the copperhead. They have a light itchy trigger finger. The moccasins are always in a bad mood. At our rattlesnakes just sit there and if you get close they let you know where they are so you don’t step on him.
I see 4 or 5 ratters a year and unless he was in my yard I wouldn’t kill it. Hell I’d drive to Dallas to kill a moccasin! Maybe just across town to kill a copper head.
