I believe they just do not understand how it applies to them, not having any real interaction of applying it to their lives.

I had some relatives who lived in CA during the Watts riots. When the riots started they went and purchased some guns and ammunition. When the gun shop told them they had to wait 15 days to take possession of them they were astounded.

Yes, they had voted for that law. But in their minds it was just for the "bad" people. They were "good" people so it should not apply.

That was the beginning of their journey in understanding. It was a good start and has continued.
