Reeder Custom Guns - Messin' With The Mosin

I have been loading ammo and pulling bullets. I decided to weigh a bunch of the powder charges in the 7.62x54R military loads.

The bullets are steel core 150 grain FMJ of course. They are a lot longer than the jacketed lead core 150 grain bullets.

The powder looks like 3031 and the cases have the approximate charge of powder for 3031. "Approximate" I say. The Lyman book lists 46 grains max for 150 gr. bullets. Quite a few of these were a little over that. The charges ran from lowest of 45.6 grains to the heaviest of 46.8 grains.

I am loading some of the pulled bullets over 55 grains of H380. Will see if they are any different than the military loads.

I am using new PPU brass that is Boxer primer. I have a few Winchester cases but there is a huge difference between the two.

The Winchester cases weigh 177.7 grains and hold 61.2 grains of water.
The PPU cases weigh 150.2 grains and hold 65.6 grains of water.

While it hasn't shown itself to be a tack driver, the time spent working with it has been good. We shall see what comes.

Someone invested some effort into it. Mannlicher type stock with raised cheek piece. Adjustable peep sights. Still has the "Mum" on it. It looks nice. It was covered with dust bunnies inside & out when I first saw it. Couldn't even see down the barrel. Disassembled & cleaned it up. Unfortunately the barrel looks like a twisted sewer pipe inside.

Don't know. Haven't shot it. I made a half hearted attempt to find ammo at one time & then just stuck it in the closet. Seem to recall it is the 6.5mm version, but no longer certain. I'm thinking the projectile would be really roughed up by the time it exited the barrel.

I have shot some guns with bores that were rusted .. pitted .. and actually had some give decent accuracy. Not always but enough that I always figure to give 'em a try.

Only shooting will tell. Wish I had access to a bore-scope that takes pictures. The Rifling (generous term in this case) is unlike anything I've ever seen. The Lands are not flat. They are peaked & very uneven. They look more like threads inside a nut.

My uncle brought home an Arisaka from Iwo Jima when he was there and my brother and I played with it as kids. I remember running the bolt and firing it, all make believe, but then I figured out the bolt release lever on the left side, pulled the bolt, and took the bolt apart. It was an education, finding the bolt only had three pieces, and the firing pin slid right off the stem. And on again, and off as I played with it. the safety was interesting as well, a palm on the bolt end Chrysanthemum twisting to the left or right. It was the first rifle I actually operated when I was 7.

We'll spend weeks to get a gun right. I've bought many guns that supposedly wasn't working right. More times than not, it's been something in the scope mounting system.

My problem is once I get them right, I loose interest. I only find them fun when they don't work right.

I got that Marlin 30-30 running real nice and then found out it was a son-in-law's birthday and he was wanting a "deer rifle" ... so off it went. And I don't even miss it. Wasn't too long before I was looking for something else to work on.
