Reeder Custom Guns - No more Christmas food baskets for Mozambique children

For years, this board, along with a few other folks who aren't members here, have provided Christmas food baskets for sponsored children and their families in Mozambique. I can't even remember how long we have done it, at this point. It was a highlight of the season for some, as they would email me as we approached the holidays and ask if we were doing it again.

I've been in contact with Don Kantel, who spearheaded things on the ground in Mozambique, and we won't be doing it this year. From what I understand (and Jim Taylor can correct me if I miscommunicate it), political instability made it untenable for them to keep operations going there. They transferred things to another group who has no good way of receiving donations from the US.

Don thanked us for all our years of helping the children and families down there. It is sad to see it come to an end.

I don't know if there is another way we can give as a group this season. I'm happy to chip in if someone has an idea.

Thank you to the Misfits for so many years of helping God's poorest children have a feast at Christmas.

Between the worst hurricane to ever hit the state, a second hurricane that hit 13 miles from the first and the Coronavirus, needy is not hard to find.

That is basically correct. Part of the problem is that the group who was supporting Don and his work in the villages of Mieze and Noviane near Pemba, that group is based in Canada where Don lives. The Canadian economy has suffered because of Covid and the supporting group ran out of funds. They could no longer support the work in those villages.

In addition, Don and his wife have retired after 20-some years in Africa. The mission group that took over in his place have decided they cannot maintain the work in those villages and are closing it down.

Don has maintained contact with about 70 of the young people and has built housing for the girls who are going to School/University. I have been blessed to be able to help with this as some of the young ladies were just kids when I first met them. Now some are studying to be Doctors and Nurses. Others are studying for other professions. All are doing well in School. I am still helping support some of them.

Since the terrorist attacks north of Pemba about 250,000 refugees have made their way to Pemba and are living in pretty tough conditions, especially since the rainy season is starting. Iris Global is feeding over 2,000 people a day. Most have arrived with only what they can carry. It is not a good time there.
