Reeder Custom Guns - Pistol hunting in South Africa

Where can you find the regulations on what the minimum barrel length for a hunting revolver in South Africa? I have found where it says it must have a scope and a minimum barrel of 100mm but I thought it was longer? Am I wrong?

I sent Gary an extra FA83 7.5 inch barrel. He added the brake, now it’s 9+ so Africa Legal. I would make, get a definitive answer before going, you don’t want to get your gun confiscated

least 8" barrel and a scope permanently attached. Also no semi autos at all, no rimfires and no shotguns. Single shot handguns are fine as are revolvers with the above listed exceptions. Bolt action or pump rifles are fine too. These are the rules as of this past January. If there are any new rules they will be released after Jan. 1st.

I book an African hunt every year or so and usually book 12 hunters plus me. If you do decide to go to Africa you have to go thru and with a registered PH and there are several forms to fill out plus you have to have a passport. Hunting with handguns is mainly South Africa. other countries may OK it but lots of high dollar special permits and so on. But South Africa is where the trophy animals are. At one time I had 39 animals in the top 10 handgun and 19 in the top 5, so the trophy animals are there. One thing to stay away from, unless you know the outfitter is package hunts. In many caes the PH will go to one of the animal sales a week or so before you get there and buy the animals that are on th package hunt list. Then when you get there they ride you around in a Land Cruiser arund and around in a 300 to 500 acre pasture and you see one of your animals and shoot it. You end up getting the 5 animals you wanted but got immature animals and were cheated out of seeing the real Africa. If the outfitter doesn't hunt at least 75,000 to 100,000 acres you are getting screwed.

All of our hunts are on government concessions or 125,000 to 225,000 acres.

If you decide to go I would do so in the next year or two as the anti hunters are really strong in Africa and hunting there may be on it's last legs.

let his hunters come in with revolvers with short barrels and no scopes, plus one had a Glock 10mm, and they took a lot of game with them. The hunters showed pictures all over the internet and the PH got arrested and fined $150,000 or 8 years in jail. I read that in one of the Africa hunting magazines. So if you go let Gary put you in touch with a PH that can help you do it right.

I'm going to try to post a pic of the pistol Gary built for me to take to Africa last year, and now I'll be using it this year! 8.5 inch barrel, no iron sights, 2x Burris scope, all wrapped around 500 Linebaugh.

100mm is a 4" barrel and that is absolutely wrong.

Everything I can find on line says 100mm for revolvers and 150mm for break action pistols. It does say that a revolver has to have a scope and it lists .22 as suitable for game up to a Rock Hyrax. Not sure if these are old rules or what. Is it different from area to area in South Africa. I think the above was for the Cape Area. I also read about people hunting with 4 5/8” and 5 1/2” barreled.500 JRHs and .475 Linebaugh’s in South Africa

have never been to Africa and don't know diddly about the rules. I have read the rules and normally send a copy of them to my guys who go to Africa with me. The things I told you are what was in the rule book this time last year and it is not different area to area. Those rules are for the entire country of South Africa. Several of the guys going with me in April have been with me to Africa several times and know the rules. A couple of them are using revolvers with 8" barrels plus the muzzle brake if they have one on it. The rules specifically say any handgun under 8" is not considered a hunting gun, but is a defensive weapon which is not allowed. It also says 22 rimfire in not legal.

Also those guys that hunted with the short barreled handguns are the ones that got the PH arrested and he had to pay a large fine or spend 6 or 8 years in jail.

You can do whatever you like. I am not going to argue with you. It doesn't matter to me. I am not a booking agent. I don't make a penny off the 11 or 12 guys going with me to Africa. I just enjoy having good friends with me on a special hunt like Africa. But I make sure we all follow the rules. It is just plain stupid to listen to some guys on the internet that have never been there. I won't ruin a $20,000 hunt just so I could sneak some illegal thing into South Africa.

Look up Madubula Safaries and look at the rules, or talk to the head man John Abraham. He has been the International Professional Hunter of the year and the African Professional Hunter of the year twice. I think he knows his stuff.

May never make it to Africa but if I do I would want to be legal. I have just seen so much conflicting info and would want to do it right. The internet is great for info but you have to find the correct info which was the reason for the question. When I searched the only thing I could find was the 100mm requirement but I have read on here about the 8 inch minimum so that was why I asked. It is nothing personal and I am not saying you are wrong but if I do get to go to Africa I don’t want to take the chance of losing a gun or my freedom because someone told me something wrong and I didn’t research it. Obviously if I took an 8 inch barreled gun I would be OK (unless it has been changed to 10 inches or something) I just want to find where the rules are and look for myself. I am funny that way. No insult meant or implied.
