Reeder Custom Guns - Feeding the Winchester 1892 44-40 WCF...

It's interesting that Kelye posted the 44-40 brass today. I've been working today getting ready to test out the Winchester 1892.

I've got a friend who has an 1892 in 44 Magnum. It will not reliably feed SWC Bullets. The sharp shoulder catches on the chamber mouth.

I'm hoping the tapered case of the 44-40 will no present the same problem. The trusty FedEx Truck delivered two boxes of ACME 240 grn Coated SWCs today. So, I'll know soon enough.

Hopefully a range report will follow sooner than later.

New Vaquero in .45 Colt when suddenly the ammo lost some zip and my 2" groups grew to about 4-5" at 25 yds. at the indoor range. Loading another round of SWC I remembered I did not load any .45 Colt SWC ammo. They were .44/40! No harm and they fired ok. Mashed back into .44-40 later too.

Until I ordered my Uberti/Navy Arms Saddle Carbine (it's in but my FFL has not called me) my only vehicle was a rechamebred .44 Mag. SBH cylinder. The cylinder throats would give Huey the hives, they are of course 0.431" as typical. However I used a 0.430" piloted reamer to rechamber the .44 into a .43-40! That helped shoot for concentrically perfect chambers, which should at least give hope. I just load 0.430" or so bullets in my .44-40 cases. I'd rather be 0.003" too big than too small. It shoots great.

Maybe they will work in the spaghetti levergun too.

I replaced the expander in my Lee Dies with a .428" from a 44 Magnum Die.

Even the Winchester Chambers ammo loaded with .430" bullets, but .431" are a no go. Works fine since the bore slugged .4285".

I bought some Casull alloy cast bullets with Hi-Tech Coating. You can push these hard.

Will be fun testing the new-old round to it's full potential.

and did some naughty things with them. Thankfully I ran out of stamina before I ran them fast enough to hit POA with my sights run down all the way. They were still printing high and I got all I wanted in a hurry. I know why we got them cheap. lol If you ever need to shoot through telephone poles I have a great load.
