For the longest time I had only 7 1/2" SA

then I procured some 5.5 and 4.75 guns. I find the 4.75" shoot just as well as the others and are easier packing. For heavy hunting loads I use a 6-7.5 length but any more I find that a 255-280 gr 45 colt bullet at 1000-1100 fps will kill anything I need to kill, recoil is snappy but not heavy.
