In a DA that will accept them the tiny rims jump the ejection stars. But if the firing pin has the reach and a sloppy fit does not take all the zip from the hammer hit, it can work. If only for a dire Die Hard or Red Dawn application. Good to know. Most .22 WMR will happily fire .22 RF, while bulging or even splitting the cases (surely spitting a bit of gas too) it fires.

I read an article where a robber was caught with a .44 revolver (I think it was abroad where resources are limited). They found he had TWO .22 rimfire rounds in each .44 cylinder! While he had bad judgement and knew little of firearms it seems his math skills were still intact. Lol
