and using a fired .22 Magnum cartridge to shoot the .22 Long Rifle in the Magnum chamber. I had not done this in years so I went out to the shop and experimented after I wrote that.

My sixgun .. has one .22 Magnum chamber that my Dad rechambered years ago.

I fired a Federal HP .22 Long Rifle in the Magnum chamber to start things. I should have known, Dad chambered this to a very tight Magnum chamber. The LR did not split but became a reverse bottleneck.

I fired a .22 Magnum in the Mag chamber, then removed the rim and found it to be a very tight press fit for the .22 Long Rifle. When I did it years ago it was in a rifle I had built and chambered for .22 Magnum and it is possible ... very likely .. that the chamber was large. I did not remember it being a tight fit like this. Perhaps I should have seated the LR into the mouth of the Magnum cartridge? Maybe the walls are thinner there? More testing will be required.

I shot it into a 2x4 and then recovered the bullet.

It will work. It may not be a hand-fit. Depends on your gun.

adopters from MCA that do the same thing... Your way is a lot cheaper..

from the correct thickness sheet (basically making some adapters) from perhaps soda can aluminum or brass sheeting.

A .22 Mag case is THICK! I bet a .22 LR case with the web cut off and side split might be better. Tell us Jim.

He used something to bump up the back of the case some to make sure it was centrally located. Firing it bulged up the front of the case to hold a bullet, more firing expanded the back to get usable solid head cases.

Sounded fun. I used some tape on the brass case and a light wadcutter load. Blam, split the case from stem to stern. While not very scientific (one isolated data point) my interest in the experiment ended there.

Sometimes the LR cartridge is pretty tight in the Magnum case.

new, more fresh, .22 RF will usually blow out like that and shoot OK for emergency purposes. However older ammo or that stored in say...a glove box for 2-3 years in all sorts of temp variations, will usually split to some degree.

With most modern .22 revolvers they have "recessed" rim cylinders. The RF round fits flush with the back of the cylinder. This would make it very unlikely that ANY gas could slip past the seated rim and be directed toward the recoil shield and bystanders. I have blasted myself with cylinder wash holding beside a tree limb or back blast off of a bench rest shooting revolvers. Pre-war Colts and maybe others did sport "non-Recessed" RF cylinders and in case of a web rupture "could" in theory have a side gas release. None of them should be re-chambered to .22 WMR but MANY were found in .22 WRF which is the same diameter as the much higher pressure .22 Magnum RF. Just be aware and protect yourself and any onlookers.
