How goofy do you think a 10" 7mm GNR would be?
I love the cartridge and think it's likely one of Gary's very best. The 14" baked barrel makes a HUGE fireball with H322. But easily punts the 120 gr. at 2400 fps.
I had a 10" .280 GNR once. It would not go much faster but it was very accurate.
I guess a 10" would be the same as a 12" braked set-up so maybe 80-100 fps (4-5%) down for the same load.
I have a 10" 7GNR
It doesn't get much play right now, but I like it. Its an old 7TCU that I had Gary punch out to a 7 GNR. The This barrel was a damned fine shooter in TCU. Shooting on iron sight its a fine shooter on the blown out 30-30 case. My plan was to get anther G2 frame and top it with a 2 or 4x scope for an in the backpack truck gun. Just never happened. Kind of a grab and go hunting set up.
Its my suspicion, that a 7GNR, 30 GNR or the 300GNR are your finest picks for short barreled 200 yard deer hunting. I'd throw smaller calibers in there,.. but I like a little more bullet weight as and option. I know the smaller calibers are just fine.

Gary brought a neat gun to HHC. It was a .357 mag he had rechambered to .357 Max. and made it shiny with scratching all over it. It was well Coon fingered in TN. I wanted it bad but blew all my crazy money just to get to HHC that year. I missed it.
In my late trading I found this at a Cabelas in KS. I even got to use up my Cabelas card points on it! Merry Christmas! These are literally hand made little gems. Outstanding trigger pulls and accuracy. The only thing I don’t like about them (I think) is they have spring plunger extractors? A cam type is light years better, the TC has a cam extractor you know. But still they were bucket list guns for me to try. Anytime you can get one under $750 you stole it. Usually they run just into four figures. They can take a scope too. Not sure if it’s tapped under that big rear sight. It needs a compact pistol scope for sure.
Nobody in Kansas City knew just exactly what a 7mm International Rimmed was and Wal-mart didn’t stock ammo. So I swooped in. But you’re probably ahead of me and my plan. Ammo for me with dies I can scrounge is easy peezy.
I’ve always thought the rakish lines distracted the more industrial hints of construction. I think they are pretty!

I love scrounging up strange stuff to share with Misfits at HHC or with Doug, maybe even Jim at one of the shoots. It’s really a blessing to me.
I think that's pretty cool.
Referring Sean's comment on speed, I think 2200-2300 is going to be the sweet spot for 120s or 140s. I tried hard to make my old TCU push 120s to 2200, its just not made for it. I think the 7mm GNR will make that gun all it can be.
One of my tricks I use if efficiency is an issue
in a shorter barrel is to go to a heavier bullet. If I run out of steam pushing a 120 then I might try even a 160! The heavier bullet has more resistance and burns more of the powder. It's an old Indian trick.
Once at the Y-O and for a goof I loaded Doug and I some hot ammo for our .338 GNR's. We both had Encores that year and I loaded 200 gr. Hornady's with literally a case full of BLC-2 military powder. At each thunderclap of a shot a fireball half the size of a Volkswagen was displayed at high noon in the sunshine! It was brilliant. The guides still speak of it. LOL But I still was pushing that 200 gr. at 2600 fps, honest Injun, from a 14" barrel. We both took handgun Blackbuck with one shot each. Everyone was happy.
