Reeder Custom Guns - My son is cross eye dominant.

Took my 9yr old son shooting yesterday discovered that he's cross eye dominant. It not a big deal as a lot of people shoot just fine this way. We had a great time. I'm not panicking, as he was able to hit his targets, but he was struggling with either shooting rifle weakside or with his weak eye. I kind of tried to leave it alone this session to see how he handled it on his own. I've been reading and watching some videos of cross eye dominant people talk about how they shoot. Most of it points to learning to shoot the rifle iron sights with the weak eye. More stability shooting strong side. And all that makes sense to me.

Pistol shooting was more straight forward. Basically turn your head a little to let the dominant eye do the work. Easy Peasy. I have a lightweight Ruger 22 to start that with a little later.

Any insight or experience from the Misfits?

She was right handed but left eye dominant. She transitioned to shooting left handed and it was not a problem for her. She had no experience shooting prior to this and said it worked well for her.

She literally couldn’t hit a sheet of plywood at 15 yards. Gary suggested I get her an AR with a red dot sight. Shooting with both eyes open. That helped a little but the gun was too loud and scary(black) and all. Gary took car of it by turning it pink. With double muffs to cut the sound she could hit the plywood sheet.

I’m sure a few misfits remember her zebra kill at the HHC

My son is right handed, left eye dominant. Starting with his nerf guns I have him shoot left handed. I figure if he learns from the get go to hold his guns left handed he should be fine. As he gets older he can shoot from the passenger side much easier than a right handed shooter could!

how to shoot long gun left, handgun right just fine. I wish, looking back that I would have made myself learn handgun with left hand, but hindsight is 20-20, and mostly had to learn all on my own. Just my two cents ymmv. I will never make a shooting championship, but good enough for a country boy.

I shoot handgun left eye, right hand. I shoot rifle right hand, right eye. I can shoot both left handed, but i’m right handed, so i usually shoot that way.. Grandkids will figure out how they want to do it, i would let them try different ways with different guns.....i always pushed the handguns a little bit, because that has been my preference since high school.

.. what happens on its own. He may fall into a solution naturally. If not, maybe I can see where he has the most success and help train him up to do what ever that is.

I used to force myself to use my right eye. Sometime in the last 5 years I started forcing myself to use my dominant eye, and that drastically improved my shooting.

I’m a left eye dominant guy who has spent quite a bit of time coaching wrestling as well as shooting competitive bullseye and archery.

It does not take long for a left-eye dominant shooter to learn to shoot left-handed. if you are competiting in archery or shooting long guns, I feel there is enough advantage that learning to shoot left handed is worth it. Yes, equipment is a little more expensive and certain models are not made for southpaws, but there are usually plenty of good options.

Shooting bullseye, I would tape over my dominant eye and shoot booth eyes open right handed. I shot well like that for many years and have never regretted it.

You would be surprised a how fast a true lefty can adapt to shooting left handed. In archery...scores really increase when the shooter does not go against their eye dominance.
