Not that the 7GNR needs much hype help among those that know it,.. this thing it just great.
My brother in law is part of a White Tail club that hunts a huge swatch of Ag land with only a few members. They only ever shoot bucks and then only if its a monster. After years of hunting like this they've decided to cull a lot of does over the next few seasons. They got all hot on the subject and want to take 15 does before the end of the season. I don't make these decisions,.. I just got asked to shoot does. So, what do I care.
We got setup yesterday around 4pm. Late to the stand. but they said they're over run. So I figure we're all good, and we were. Around 4:30 4 does walk out around 240 to 250 yards. One is a pretty healthy gal. I'm thinking this will be my longest shot with a pistol (scoped G2). I've taken several out to real close to 200. 250 didn't really feel much different looking down the scope. I know the load and the gun well, so I'm feeling good. I'm shooting 139s at 2300-2350 fps. I'm zeroed roughly 2 inches high at 100 yards. With around a 8-10 drop at 250 I feel like I have a fair margin of error and still take the old girl cleanly. I'm in a very solid home built stand with a lot of room and a good solid corner to lock into. I get setup, scope the doe. Wait a few minutes for a broadside shot. She turns and I set the cross hair at the top of the shoulder with the horizontal on the length of her back. I'm thinking I'll take out the lungs, at worst (or best) the heart, but I'm expecting a lung shot. I start in on the trigger and boom. She jumps,.. does the dance for few seconds and then tries to bolt for the trees. She makes it about 10 yards and piles up and tries a wallow in the dirt a bit and stops. I've popped another one in the chamber and I have the scope on her for another shot. But she's done. Hoping for another doe I sit until its too dark to see.
When I walked out to see what I've done I found her heart shot. I either moved a little on the shot or I'm shooting a little slower that I thought I was. Really,.. it could be either. I may try to chrono again when the weather warms up. But I will not change a thing with the gun or the load. I'm pretty danged happy with it.
With the GPS it showed the shot was about 240. The farthest I regularly shoot to on the on range is 200.
I do think that 250 might be about my limit. At 7x on the scope it was a little tough for me to line up. I'd likely be fine at 4x or 5x. I tend to over think these things.
Mine is a 12" G2 with 2-7 Burris Scope.
