Packing Pistol from the Past

Some years ago I had a "Packing Pistol" built. It was a fun little gun and I enjoyed it. When I moved to Africa it was sold to help finance the trip. I have forgotten where it went but I hope whoever got it enjoys it.

I started with an Old Model Ruger .357 Blackhawk. (Not a flattop .. I flattopped it with my horseshoe rasp)
I had it rechambered and rebarreled to .45 ACP with the barrel as short as practical.

Note that I left the old sight in. Later on I had the top strap welded up and re-cut to Colt SAA configuration and then I had the gun nickle-plated.

It was a fun little gun .. snappy recoil with +P ACP's.

The 45 Colt cylinder will chamber and shoot 45 Cowboy, 45 Schofield and 45 Colt. The 45 AR cylinder will shoot 45 Auto Rim and 45 ACP.

I think many of us think in a like manner. Doug and I sort of kept details secret from each other for our PPP. Base minimums were a 4" barrel and over .357 to comply with primary arm requirements for some States and deer.

I chose a OM .357 as base gun, no collector (they all will be some day thanks to goofs like us) but a common 6.5" well worn. I think Doug did the same. Gary built me a .44 Special to my specifications, flat topped, retaining the alloy gripframe but Gunfightered and light in weight. He made it all shiny and flashy, the revolver version of Dolly Parton. Doug surprised me with his direction. He did not flat top his but went blue matte chromex and of all things chambered in 10mm auto. It was more of a Tatto'd biker chick in comparison to mine. This left lots of metal in the cylinder and we could seat bullets longer if we wanted. We settled on 170-180 gr. bullets at 1200 fps. He finished off several heads of game with it in TX and TN. I took a nice ram at HHC with my .44 and some loads Jon Thompson gave me. I also dispatched a feral dog, the only time I did not mind shooting a dog. He really had gone to the dark side and was dangerous running a pack. His two buddies ate him!
