Would it be possible and safe to convert a Colt Python to 10mm?

a classic $3500-4000 one? It's like putting a twin shot NOS system on your old truck. Yes it will work, for a short while. Performance that crosses the line of mechanical sensibilities comes at a steep and abrupt price. Cost and longevity.

I have a .40/10mm 5-shot on a Ruger .22 chassis. I think that platform is more robust than the I-frame Colts.

Top was it's first rework but stock .32 H&R chambering, the bottom is my specification modification to .400 cal.

I wouldn’t do it to an older model. I still wish S&W would do a Model 69 in 10mm. Might have to get a 610 and slap a rebored Python barrel on it

Boy was it a pain. I tried .30-30 brass first. Cutting them down, trimming and thinning the rims, inside teaming. What a chore. The pawl gearing on the cylinder from gun to gun is a huge variable wild card. I think I abandoned the initial effort and made “10mm Auto Rimmed” from heavily modified .41 Magnum.

I sized in a .40 S&W die, turned the case web down in the lathe and heavily modded the rim thickness and diameter. They finally worked for proof of the exercise but by that time I had lost interest. They also fit my .401 Herters. I was NOT butchering up those original cases. I make those from .41 magnum too for actual use.

I use these for a straight wall .40 caliber magnum (1.29" case length) in my 686/646. Works for 10mm auto rim, as well.

All you need to do is trim to length and ream the inside of the neck. I also expand the neck by 5 thou with a mandrel first, but it's not necessary.

The base diameter is already perfect and it conveniently has the ubiquitous .473" rim. So, if you want a bolt action, magazine fed carbine a new barrel is all you need.

It's unbelievably accurate. I slicked it up, changed the springs, put on good grips and bought TK Clips. Probably my favorite DA Revolver...

if we will ever see those again. They sold slowly over time and some bargains were to be had. Now I have seen used ones go for $900!

David Clement converted to 10mm that was my daily carry for many years before Ruger saw the light. Sold it to someone that wanted it really bad and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Hell of a gun and slick action. Slab sided barrel was cool looking too.

As others said, GP100 is cheaper, etc.

But, the new Python definitely can. You could also go 10mm mag.

I'm doing something similar. I had reamers made for a rimmed straight-wall .40 caliber magnum cartridge. Similar to the old .401 Powermag, but in true .40/10mm. Essentially it will be a 10mm mag, but rimmed.

Some would likely argue, "why not go .41 mag?" These days, with the popularity of 10mm, bullet selection is better for 10mm than .41. Even though some factory ammo is available for .41 it's really a handloader's cartridge.
