Reeder Custom Guns - Need some guidance on necking-up

I am starting to load 361 Falcon in an encore. I fireformed (tried to anyway) some cases but they did not expand all the way out to fit the chamber. I don't want to crush the cases trying to expand the neck in the dies. I used what would be a normal charge of powder (H322) for the cartridge. Should I use a faster burning powder? Or more powder to fireform the cases?

The neck with the dies. I lube the the inside in the case edge a little so the expander will slide in and out of the neck easy. The I load the 270 gr Speer bullet for fire forming. I use the Speer bullets because they are inexpensive and easy to get. I was doing that with a cut down 9.3x62 die before Gary’s dies where available. I don’t think I have lost a case even with used 30-30 brass.

and forming instills confidence. Refined to success, the skills enlighten one to a sense of no limits or restraints (other than physics - it's really your friend). I actually enjoy the challenge of making about any case I can imagine for any old obsolete thing there is. It's as much fun as any other facets of shooting sports. Sure there are lots of mashed and split cases but each one is a lesson.

I have a 355 GNR that I use 30-30 factory loads to fireform. Works perfectly, use the cheapest 30-30 I can find. Very inaccurate!

or something to salvage them and shoot them later. No engraving in the bore. As long as they are not bent upon impact they may be usable.

For forming with “blank” loads I always use very fast pistol powder. AA#7 works great, filled to top of the shoulder.

Using a projectile I’d figure it would blow out easily. Even just shooting a loaded .30-30 in it.

I've only ever fire formed with "blank" loads, no projectile. So just to be sure, if I do use a smaller projectile than what the bore is, it won't damage anything? It won't bounce around down the barrel? I guess the bullet is softer material than the barrel anyway.

simply shoot .30-30 cartridges and pull out perfectly formed cases. Provided they are not so old or brittle necked. Old brass can split. But it won't hurt anything, velocity is very low, maybe only BB gun range. I have found bullets on top of the dirt.

I'm not telling anyone to do this, but I have done some things. Like carefully shooting a 7.62x39 out of a .401 Winchester to form a case for inspection. They make wonderful usable brass.

*Just hit your blanks again with a faster powder. I sometimes neck up and shoot the original size projectile, with a lighter load, to blow out the shoulder. That is technically and classically what most call "fireforming".

This is a formed 7mm IR case that will chamber, I'll shoot it and form the shoulder and taper to the fireformed ctg. on the right.
