Reeder Custom Guns - Why is it hard to get pretty .32-20 necks

I used to get bulges on one side seating the bullet. I figured it was too tight (.308 spec.) sizers and seating .311 bullets. I found if I used the flaring die provided with that particular set it worked much better. I was previously using a universal flaring tool

Today I'm getting heavier crimps on one side than the other. The bullets I'm using do have a very deep crimp groove. I could have just seated deeper and barely rolled the crimp in. I did need to flair just a bit to prevent bullet shaving. I used the 113 gr. (my measurement) bevel base .313" flat points and 3.0 gr. Bullseye for maybe 850 fps for my old Colt. I hope to give the old man a run this weekend.

I seem to be having about 4% malformed necks. No prob though. I trim back to 1.250” for the .310 Cadet rounds.

In my experience with the 32-20, it's THE ONLY way to crimp them to get decent uniform crimps.....

But not in that cal. If I had a lever gun I’d probably run and get one. I had a bullet or two that Huey hooked me up with that had a different profile than mine. It’s shallow groove did not lose uniformity in crimping. I think the other just had too deep a groove and the thin brass.

That Huey bullet might be the ringer for my old Colt limited to lower pressures. The HP boosts validity considerably. I loaded some in .32 S&W too for my little Pocket Positive.

It might be a little short, but works for 32-20 in a Blackhawk 30 Carbine..isn’t that the “trick” you talked about for using 32-20 in a 30 Carbine, using 30 Carbine dies to load 32-20?
If the crimp is too low, it may help center the bullet, if lightly crimped with the 30 Carbine factory crimp die, and then slowly roll crimp the cartridge, turning the cartridge a little each stage of the crimp.
Then when i think about it, you probably already tried all that

Since the body is bigger diameter. The .30 C sure is thick at the neck. It's been years since I've loaded them, last was for a Ruger Revolver. I had no issues at all.

I once had a nice little Universal .30 Carbine with a Williams rear sight. It shot fantastic and carried like a Daisy BB gun. I cannot imagine why I sold it. Youth and the lure of something else shiny.

Have you tried the 30 Carbine factory crimp die?

I think the reverse, a .30C in .32 WCF might be possible
