The under barrel "magazine" that began in the 1860's and all the Winchesters, Marlins, used so successfully was also first utilized as a repeating mechanism on bolt actions. The mentioned Mauser holds 12-13 rounds of .45/70 level powered ammo! In the late 1880's it was pretty formidable and even today you don't want to catch one of those one ounce slugs. They are some of the most accurate old rifles around. I could hit a 5 gal. bucket easily at almost 250 yds. behind my house. Mine was made by Amberg in 1887. America was really taking "hind tit" for a good while with the 1873 Trap Door until the advent of Springfield 1903 really. The Krag (1892-98, I have a 1896) was good, lots better, but not really that good on the speedy reload. Those Mausers with rounds on loading clips were very formidable. A determined guy well trained could work it to an advantage.
