Semi-Dumb question

Maybe I have too much time on my hands so I tend to daydream quite a lot on things.

Carbon fiber barrels.

How practical are they for say the Contender and Encore family?

I was thinking of a " super lightweight" hunting pistol that should be easier to carry on backpack hunts and the like. Not that I plan on any such hunts in the future but I do think about it from time to time.

Just curious. Thank you

I have a Volquartsen HB 10/22 barrel

It of course shoots fantastic. There is a lot of technology with those barrels. Winchester first "fiberglass wrapped" the barrel on the M59 shotgun, if I remember right. There is tension involved. Ditto my BP cannon barrel with a steel liner iron cast around it. The iron shrinks and grips it after casting when cooling. The .22 RF barrel is a stainless rifled barrel wrapped in carbon fiber. It is as big as a normal HB set-up but weighs the same as the stock little whippy barrel carbine. That's nice.

The CF barrel may be a different cup of tea. The old snake eating and egg thing (in reverse) upon firing might be too much for the wrapping.

Christensen Arms has been doing it on rifles for years.

I agree. But on a muzzle braked, high stepping, .25-7mm specialty round it might not be too bad.

I’m thinking more of a varmint pistol

Something like a 223 or maybe a Raptor.

neither of them is a heavy kicking round

so a fiberglass barrel would be like tits on a chicken.

I like light wait gear for sure but, my 12” G2 in 361 Falcon

Only weighs 4.7 lbs scoped and loaded. Even I can carry that
All day. How light do you need. At some point the trade off will
Effect performance. And cost has to be weighed into the equation.
Sorry, couldn’t resist!
