Sauer & Sohn made this particular model. It is full size to the Colt SAA but made from some potmetal. The barrel has a steel rifled liner as do the cylinder chambers. They did made some steel frame centerfires too. It's often cited the lack of transfer bar type safety features in the designs as to the motivation for them dropping away in the early 1970's

My example as some proof marks that make me think it was made or proofed in 1967.

This is a typical hasty shot offhand target at 25 yds. Not bad for fixed sights. It seemed to work out for me about 0.005" of front sight equals about an inch. I opened the rear notch but the frame groove is too shallow. It is serviceable. I have $2000 revolvers that are not as much fun to bang away with as this old beater. (then again I don't want to damage those!) I think they were about $20-$30 new.

It was the name of the guys secretary? Not insinuating any hanky-pankey but he needed a name for the federal form, and his had some issues?

Was there a Great Western/Hawes connection? Both were in LA right? Californy-Colts! The Herters was also a Sauer & Sohn made product.

He renamed his company after his secretary Rosemary Hawes. The only connection between Great Western and Hawes was the fact that Hy Hunter was an early distributor for Great Westerns which were made in Los Angeles.

I almost bought a double rifle in 470 Nitro made by Sauer & Sohn. The Colt/Sauer rifles are high dollar. I bought a 300 Win Mag Colt/Sauer for Colleen back in '92 for her first Africa hunt. It was well over $3000.

bolt is a small bolt that could be worked with your little finger. It is a 1992 gun so there must have been different styles and changes between the late '70s and the early '90s.
