There are some really need varmint bullets around that would do well at the less than rifle velocity. In my .22 CF handgun shooting I found that some varmint bullets performed pretty well at the revolver reduced velocity, they were not explosive. If you pick a heavier constructed rifle bullet made for 3000 fps it will act mostly like a FMJ.
The .240 Banshee really shows promise in a Contender barrel garnering impressive efficiency and velocity. I have a cast bullet mould, although a bit heavy at 98 gr., that I wanted to toy with. If you see me post something about the 6mm cast shooting remind me and I'll send you a few bullets to try. My memory is short, but I have good intentions.
Also the .401 GNR is a real peach. On the easy to get .44 Mag. case it really performs. Sort of a mini-.410 GNR. It shoots a 200 gr. cast bullet near 1600 fps from my 5.5" Custom. I usually back off to around 1500 fps though. Some old 170 gr. .38/40 cast bullets did well too after applying over plain base gas checks. We were concerned about not having crimp groves on some 10mm bullets but so far that has been a non issue.
