I can encrypt my email so that no one can read it but the person I send it to. I have to include a hint as to the password unless we have previously worked out something.
If a person has Proton Mail already, anything we send between each other is encrypted from desktop to desktop.
You get what you pay for..

"free" email could go away at any time. A few years ago I switched to hushmail, their servers are in Canada, $50 per year, also encryptable. That and Proton mail have been recommended by some local tech guys that have a weekly radio show.
I also use a VPN for some things.
